Expert Commentary ProgrammeIn addition to its research programmes, CISES recruits a small team of staff who support the organisation’s publishing, communications, events, and partnership activities. Frequently Asked Questions
Are roles open to international applicants and are they remote?
CISES is a globally decentralized network with active team members contributing from over 15 countries. All positions are fully remote with the explicit exception of the Event Officer role.
There is a strong organizational preference for Event Officers to be based within London or the wider UK to facilitate smooth administrative delivery for hybrid and in-person engagement initiatives.
What is the time commitment and are these roles compensated?
All positions across CISES—including Senior Management and Research leadership—are strictly voluntary and unpaid. The base commitment is highly flexible, balancing at roughly 3 to 5 hours per week for most structural capacities.
While you can easily adapt your workflow around academic or full-time career schedules, you are required to keep your designated manager proactively updated. A baseline degree of flexibility is expected when handling time-sensitive or urgent publishing and operational deliverables.
What does the application and selection process look like?
Our selection paths depend on the specific track you apply for:
- Policy Analysts & Fellows: There is no formal interview loop. Applicants are strictly evaluated on their submitted technical credentials, documentation, and research portfolios.
- Operational Staff: Formal interviews are utilised as necessary. If selected for an operational review loop, your call will clarify prior experience and include a practical, role-specific component. Technical details regarding the practical exercise will be explicitly outlined within your invitation email.
When do application cycles open and close?
Our admission blocks follow a schedule throughout the year:
- Policy Analyst Programmes: Formally opens 4 times a year on the first working day of January, April, July, and October. If a month begins mid-week, intake officially opens on that week’s Monday. The cycle closes promptly on the Thursday evening of that month’s final week.
- Fellowships & Expert Commentary: Submissions are accepted and processed continuously on a rolling evaluation basis.
- Operational Staff Roles: Opened individually as organizational capacity requires.
Can I submit a speculative application for other staff roles?
Yes, we welcome speculative applications for operational staff updates. You can write directly to team@cises.org with your CV, a focused cover letter, and a precise pitch explaining which role matches your skills, why you want to join CISES, and how you plan to contribute.
